Studio Sessions with Gloria Green
Q: Describe your art in three words.
A: Experimentation, resilience, personality.
Q: Where do you draw inspiration?
A: My art is a form of storytelling, and my inspiration comes from the stories in my life and those close to me. The pieces are abstract, of course, but everything I create represents some part of me — even if what it's representing is just one, brief feeling or moment of my story. My recent series, Matters of the Heart, for example, was inspired by the process of healing that took place related to my personal experience of stress-induced cardiomyopathy, also known as Broken Heart Syndrome. To even tell that story, I was forced to reflect on what led me to that experience, and what it would take for me to repair a broken heart. Those kinds of stories inspire my art.
Q: What is your favourite medium and why?
A: Probably acrylic paint, but I consider myself a mixed media artist. I also love working with oil pastels, charcoal, and graphite. And I love experimenting with various techniques, layers, colours, mediums, and textures, seeing what speaks to me. There's a real rich, complex quality to these media— how they interrelate, how they invite people to lean closer and step back. I think it is such an evocative way to create art.
Q: Who are some of your favourite artists?
A: Truly too many to name. I love abstract expressionists, like Helen Frankenthaler, Joan Mitchell, Lee Krasner. I also enjoy Rothko, Franz Kline, and Jack Bush.
