Gabrielle Guthrie is a Brooklyn-based multimedia artist whose work bridges abstract painting, drawing, collage, and three-dimensional paintings. She combines hard-edged yet organic forms with repurposed materials to explore how we create, consume, and connect with the social, built, and natural environments. Her process-driven approach embraces improvisation, layering, and material play.

Inspired by color, travel, poetry, and time spent in nature, Gabrielle sees her practice as a way of making sense of the world.. Whether through folded canvases, monoprinting, or layered surfaces, her work deals with questions of chance, perception, intimacy, disconnection, and memory.

Gabrielle holds an MFA in Product Design from Stanford, and her background as a designer and user researcher informs her artistic practice. She draws from her experience studying relationships, simplifying complexity, and shaping interactions to create work that challenges assumptions and opens space for reflection and empathy.

Artist Statement:

"We often think of paintings as flat surfaces, favoring the front plane while overlooking their dimensionality. Yet paintings are three-dimensional objects, with hidden structures—stretcher bars, raw canvas backs, and the unseen labor of their making.

In this series, I emphasize these hidden structures by revealing both the front and back of the canvas while removing stretcher bars altogether. By intuitively bending and folding painted canvas over and around itself, I create works that blur the boundary between painting and sculpture, making multiple perspectives visible at once.

With titles taken from Pablo Neruda poems, this series was inspired by our increasingly polarized society—where algorithms and self-imposed echo chambers fuel misinformation, fear, and distrust. By physically layering and entwining different viewpoints, my work encourages a deeper engagement beyond surface-level assumptions, urging viewers to examine their own hidden support structures, and to consider alternative perspectives with empathy.

My background in design and user research informs my approach—shaped by years spent studying relationships, simplifying systems, and designing for interaction. This series extends my ongoing exploration of how we connect with one another and with the social, built, and natural environments that shape our lives."
