Anji Woodley is an emerging mixed-media contemporary artist from South Africa, currently based in Toronto, Canada. Her work is a reflection of her deep connection with nature and her roots, which she expresses through the use of natural materials and textures.

In her latest body of work titled Teacups and Tafel, Anji explores the intersection of cultural symbolism and natural elements through the medium of mixed media on paper. Tafel meaning table in Afrikaans and of Dutch origin, serves as a foundational motif, representing the shared experiences and traditions of South African culture particularly the ritual of tea drinking.

Anji often uses natural elements as tools and creative applications when crafting her works. Drawing inspiration from nature, Anji applies charcoal sourced from found burnt wood, mirroring the organic process of carving out figures reminiscent of natural lines etched into wood by weathering. Through the use of sticks to “carve out” figures in wet paint, Anji seeks to translate the essence of the natural world and its intricate interplay of form and texture.
