Adrienna Matzeg / At The Look Off
Adrienna Matzeg / At The Look Off
Adrienna Matzeg works at the intersection of photography and textile to create her punch needle embroidery compositions. She is drawn to the narrative quality that both photography and textiles possess, nostalgia being a prominent theme in her practice. Through reducing the subject matter in her work to simplified colours, shapes and fragments she explores how we recall memories, with a specific interest in travel destinations and souvenirs.
By working with a range of analog and digital processes including weaving, screen printing and photographic mediums, Adrienna earned her degree in Photography from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design.
Adrienna’s personal work has been shown in the MOCA Toronto, Cry Baby Gallery, The Art With Heart Auction, and the Affordable Art Fair NYC among others. Her work has been procured by Earls Restaurants and international private collectors, with select features including Colossal, Frankie Magazine, and STIRworld.
This latest series, titled The Scenic Route, features six new embroidery works. Drawing inspiration from summer road trips along the East Coast, this collection is deeply personal for Adrienna, as she lived there for several years.
Each piece in The Scenic Route conjures memories of summer road trips, rendered in vivid colored threads. A pit stop for a roadside snack, a glance at the horizon as the sun dips at dusk, or the soft glow of a neon sign against the fading day all evoke these in-between moments — the ones that linger long after the summer ends. This is the world Adrienna invites you into.
“My inspiration really started from the sensory experiences of road trips like humming along to the radio with the windows down, or the warmth of the day still lingering on your skin. I often depict destinations in my work, however the connection between place and textile felt especially meaningful—the Maritimes have such a rich history of storytelling through fiber art.” - Adrienna
